Live: White Fence @ 100 Club

Tonight’s White Fence show at the 100 Club reminds us how 60’s music will always be re-interpreted in new and interesting ways. Support bands Family and Ultimate Painting bring a  Velvet Underground and The Byrds tinged vibe to the proceedings. Ultimate Painting (former members of Mazes and Veronica Falls) really stands out with their two singers trading off vocals and harmonizing over evocative, meandering songs.

Sporting a spangly, paisley top, but with an understated presence, Tim Presley is beloved by this crowd. A highly respected figure in the psychedelic lo-fi scene, his band (including Cate Le Bon on guitar and vocals, Nick Murray on drums and bass player Josh Puklavetzon on this tour) White Fence, brings a fierceness and intensity to the stage.

Arrow Man and Fear from his 2014 album, For the Recently Found Innocent are particular standouts and we get a nearly 10 minute mega-jam at one point. It’s worth noting that this really was an all ages show.

White Fence appeals to people new to the genre of lo-fi psychedelia  and for those well familiar with Tim Presley and his circle that includes Jessica Pratt and Ty Segall. Check out his work with The Fall and Darker My Love to see the depth of his influence. It might be January, where the gigs hard to come by, but we’d all be happy to see White Fence again no matter the month.
