Converge have shared a powerful new single, We Were Never The Same, offering another stark glimpse into their forthcoming album Love Is Not Enough, due for release on 13th February.
Closing the record, We Were Never The Same distils the emotional and sonic intensity that has defined Converge’s work for more than three decades. The track channels grief, reflection and resolve into a devastating final statement, underlining the band’s ability to fuse raw emotion with uncompromising heaviness. Vocalist and lyricist Jacob Bannon explains that the song was written while reflecting on loss outside a funeral home, questioning why people so often gather to mourn rather than to cherish. The result is a searing meditation on grief, clarity and collective responsibility.
Love Is Not Enough stands as one of the most focused and urgent records of Converge’s career. Created by Bannon alongside guitarist and producer Kurt Ballou, bassist and vocalist Nate Newton, and drummer Ben Koller, the album strips away excess in favour of precision, purpose and ferocity. From the opening moments of the title track through to the closing intensity of We Were Never The Same, the record captures the anger, pain and uncertainty of the modern age with unrelenting force.
Recorded and mixed by Ballou at God City Studios in Salem, Massachusetts, with engineering assistance from Zach Weeks, the album is matched visually by Bannon’s striking artwork and design. Each song is accompanied by its own image, while the album cover depicts a celestial witness surveying a world in turmoil, reinforcing the record’s thematic weight.
For over 30 years, Converge have remained a vital force within hardcore, punk and metal, consistently prioritising intent, honesty and emotional catharsis over convention. From the landmark Jane Doe to 2021’s ambitious Bloodmoon: I, their influence on underground music is both deep and enduring. With Love Is Not Enough, the band continue to sharpen their vision, delivering a record that feels both deeply personal and universally resonant.
Converge will take this new material to European and UK stages this summer with a run of select festival appearances.
