A powerful final chapter in the legacy of Ronnie James Dio and his later-era collaboration with members of Black Sabbath is set to be revisited with the release of a new retrospective box set, Breaking Out Of Heaven 2007–2009.
Arriving on 27th March via BMG, the collection captures the triumphant reunion that saw Dio rejoin forces with guitarist Tony Iommi, bassist Geezer Butler and drummer Vinny Appice under the banner of Heaven & Hell. The project revisits the band’s unexpected second act in the late 2000s, a period that brought renewed energy to one of heavy metal’s most revered line-ups.
The forthcoming retrospective will be released as both a 7LP vinyl set and a 4CD/Blu-ray box set, each accompanied by an illustrated book featuring new liner notes by Hugh Gilmour, alongside a replica tour book and poster.
To mark the announcement, an HD-upscaled video of the band performing The Mob Rules live at New York’s famous Radio City Music Hall has been unveiled. Captured during the band’s historic 2007 reunion performance in New York, the track showcases the thunderous chemistry between the musicians as they revisit one of their most iconic songs. Check it out below:
Originally released in 1981, The Mob Rules signalled a darker sonic turn during Dio’s early tenure with Black Sabbath. The 2007 performance, however, demonstrates the renewed force the musicians brought to the material decades later, delivering a version that feels both heavier and more refined.
Breaking Out Of Heaven 2007–2009 documents the band’s return to the stage and studio following their reunion. Among the highlights included in the collection is the full Live From Radio City Music Hall performance, appearing on vinyl for the first time and featuring eight tracks making their vinyl debut.
The set also includes the band’s 2009 studio album The Devil You Know, which landed in the Top 10 upon release, as well as the live album Neon Nights: 30 Years Of Heaven & Hell – Live At Wacken, recorded during the band’s later tour in Germany.
The Blu-ray component expands the collection further with video footage from both the Radio City performance and the Wacken show, along with interviews with the band and additional behind-the-scenes material documenting this final era of Dio’s career.
Together, the recordings form a powerful reminder of the chemistry between Dio, Iommi, Butler and Appice, capturing a period when four metal legends reunited to write one final chapter in their storied history.
