Singer songwriter Laura Doggett opened as John Newman’s support act for his second London Brixton Academy date. You might be forgiven for not knowing who Laura is but you would certainly remember her afterwards.

She is fast making an impression on us with her soulful and sometime mysterious voice able to stun the hardest of hearts.

Later this year she has some headline shows of her own in London. I felt as though this was a great opportunity not just for Laura to get her work heard but also for people to discover her talent and want to see more of her when she returns.

Walking out in a long flowing dress it was clear that the minimalist set with only drums, keyboard and cello was certainly meant  to help put the spotlight on her and to draw attention to the songs.

She was greeted by the enthusiastic cheers from people crowded down at the front to those stretched back at the top of the balconies. Her dark pop music was set loose and soared over the concert hall which was appearing to be the perfect setting for her powerful vocals, Laura’s craft is such that Part Time Friend, Phoenix and Into The Glass were treated as old favourites.

Settling into the rhythm of the gig it was easy to see how involved everyone was becoming. Getting wrapped up in the performance by starting a slow wave from side to side in time.

It seemed as though she was building up to Moonshine, her new single and undoubtedly a song that will move her into the big-time. In a varied and beautifully tuneful concert she certainly saved the best until last.
