Mae Stephens is stepping into a new sonic chapter with the release of her latest single Blue, a track that reveals a more restrained and soulful edge to the UK pop powerhouse ahead of her debut headline tour next month.
Having closed out 2025 in defiant fashion with the bold and biting Done With U, Stephens now pivots into more understated territory. Blue trades sharp-tongued swagger for smooth vulnerability, blending retro Motown-inspired grooves with contemporary polish. The result is a track that feels both timeless and forward-facing — anchored, as ever, by Stephens’ commanding and character-rich vocal.
Explaining the inspiration behind the song, Mae says: “Blue simply started with an intro. Something I don’t really hear as much anymore. I wanted to create a story with this song walking through what it’s like to cross a ‘blue line’. To me a ‘blue line’ is the line to cross when there is no other option but to call it quits. I wanted to create something that doesn’t represent an angry breakup but a pattern of disappointment and frustration that leads to the final cut off point. I think this song follows very well from my previous release Done With U as they sit in the same bracket of cutting someone off/out of your life, just simply in a more pleasant, less aggressive way.”
The official video mirrors the song’s emotional tension through dramatic choreography, portraying two dancers drawn together yet ultimately forced apart — like opposing magnets. Directed by Willow Hazell, the visual pairs moody blue hues with an arresting performance from Stephens, elevating the track’s atmosphere with cinematic flair.
Blue was co-written by Stephens alongside producers Morgan Avenue — her collaborator on breakthrough smash If We Ever Broke Up — and Jheynner, bringing together a creative team that understands how to balance emotional storytelling with hook-driven impact.
Stephens’ rise has been nothing short of meteoric. From working a day job to scoring a global hit with If We Ever Broke Up, she quickly became an international success story — reaching #1 in Japan and China, landing a Top 15 single in the UK and earning Gold certifications on both sides of the Atlantic. With over 400 million streams to her name and collaborations spanning Meghan Trainor, The Chainsmokers and Alok, she has also shared stages with artists including BLACKPINK, P!NK and Tom Grennan.
Yet 2026 feels poised to mark a defining moment. Following her debut EP Securely Insecure, Stephens has spent the past year refining her artistic direction, and Blue signals a deeper, more nuanced evolution.
Her upcoming headline tour, arranged with Pure and Music Venue Trust, will see her take that arena-honed presence into intimate UK venues — offering fans the chance to connect with her music in a more personal setting.
