Miss Grit — the project of Korean-American musician Margaret Sohn — has unveiled a new single, Mind Disaster, the latest preview from their forthcoming album Under My Umbrella, arriving on 24th April.
Following earlier singles Tourist Mind and Stranger, Mind Disaster offers another glimpse into the sonic world of the upcoming record. The track unfolds as a warped lullaby, blending fizzing drums, dramatic choral textures and euphoric synths into a swirling electronic soundscape that mirrors the song’s emotional core.
Lyrically, Mind Disaster explores the overwhelming nature of social anxiety and the struggle to break free from the mental spiral that can come with it. According to Sohn, the track played a pivotal role in shaping the album’s direction.
“Mind Disaster is the one that really helped create the palette for the rest of the album for me,” they explain. “It’s my favourite instrumental on the record and so many good friends helped make it happen.”
Those collaborators include composer and electronic artist Sae Heum Han (also known as mph), producer Luciano Rossi — known for work with Mui Zyu — drummer Preston Fulks and producer/mixer Aron Kobayashi Ritch, both members of indie rock band Momma.
The upcoming album Under My Umbrella marks Sohn’s second full-length release following the acclaimed debut Follow The Cyborg. Known for moving fluidly between analogue and digital textures — from guitars to synthesizers — Miss Grit has built a reputation for sculptural, immersive sound design paired with introspective lyricism.
Much of the album was written and recorded in Sohn’s apartment in Queens after returning from an intense solo tour across North America. Seeking to capture the raw immediacy of live performance, Sohn embraced a more instinctive approach during the recording process.
“I tried not to edit too much or force a moment to happen,” they explain. “Some guitar sounds were first takes, same with vocals. It feels truer to myself, and more of a representation of what is actually coming out of me.”
Across its nine tracks, Under My Umbrella explores themes of anxiety, heartbreak and self-reflection, while blending elements of trip-hop atmosphere, dream-pop melody and maximalist electronic production.
