Old Dominion Share Soulful New Single ‘Late Great Heartbreak’ Ahead of Sixth Album ‘Barbara’

by | Aug 19, 2025

With their sixth studio album Barbara due for release this Friday (22nd August), Nashville chart-toppers Old Dominion have unveiled a final teaser: brand-new single Late Great Heartbreak. A playful, soul-inflected jam, it’s the latest sign that the record will be the band’s most adventurous to date.

Known for a decade of country-rock anthems and stadium-ready ballads, Old Dominion—vocalist/guitarist Matthew Ramsey, guitarists Trevor Rosen and Brad Tursi, bassist Geoff Sprung, and drummer Whit Sellers—push their sound into new territory with Late Great Heartbreak. Inspired by an in-studio thought experiment (“What if we made a Huey Lewis song?”), the track blends buoyant piano lines, strutting bass and Ramsey’s wry vocal delivery into something both retro and refreshing.

“The freedom we feel now comes through in the amount of fun we have during the recording process,” Ramsey explains. “It was inspiring to goof off. There wasn’t any pressure in the room. We just wanted to laugh our asses off and make a song that was catchy as hell.”

Despite its title, Late Great Heartbreak isn’t a weepy ballad. Instead, it’s a tongue-in-cheek send-off to love gone wrong—celebrating moving on with a wink and a groove, rather than wallowing in loss. That sense of playfulness reflects the mood behind Barbara, a 13-track collection shaped in the studio with no outside writers or session players, just the five bandmates jamming ideas until something clicked.

It’s an approach that’s already delivered standout moments. Fans have been treated to several advance tracks across 2025, including the anthemic Making Good Time (which recently became the most added song on country radio), the infectious Me Most Nights, and the reflective pair Man Or The Song and Miss You Man. Collectively, they suggest an album that will balance Old Dominion’s trademark hooks with more experimental textures and deeper lyrical themes.

Marking ten years since their debut Meat And Candy, Barbara captures a band fully in stride yet unafraid to evolve. Old Dominion promise what they call their “most personal album to date,” exploring life, love, and mortality without losing the optimism that has defined their rise.

The album’s release dovetails with the group’s How Good Is That – World Tour, which is taking them through North America, Europe and the UK across 2025. UK fans can catch the band this autumn at London’s Eventim Apollo (29th October), Manchester’s O2 Apollo (30th October) and Glasgow’s SEC Armadillo (31st October), part of a European run that also includes Copenhagen, Stockholm, Oslo, Hamburg, Utrecht, Antwerp and Belfast.

From van tours to arena headliners, Old Dominion have built their reputation on skyscraping choruses and undeniable live energy. With Barbara arriving this week, they look set to add a new chapter to their remarkable story—one where playfulness, experimentation, and heartfelt songwriting go hand in hand.
