Pearl Jam In Animated Tiny Concert For Superblood Wolfmoon

by | Feb 21, 2020 | Sound/Vision

Pearl Jam have dropped the video for their newest single Superblood Wolfmoon, ahead of the release of their ever impending new album Gigaton, which will be available for your consumption from all good record stores from March 27th 2020, released, as you’d expect, under their very own record label, Monkeywrench Records/Republic Records. Internationally Gigaton will be released by Universal Music Group, the 11th studio album by the Seattle rockers produced by Josh Evans and Pearl Jam.

Pearl Jam (Danny Clinch)

For this video the band teamed up with the whimsical animator and creator of Tiny Concerts Instagram Channel, Keith Ross. Ross has become known for his flighty ballpoint doodled bite-sized music videos for various artists. He started by doing a rendering of The Ramones’ debut album cut Beat On The Brat and since then has also animated snippets of videos by bands such as Black Flag, Addicts, Motörhead, and Misfits. Keith estimates that each concert averages out to 60 to 70 drawings with a lightbox, and then he shoots the photos on his iPhone, drops them into his computer and uses Photoshop’s Timeline tool for the animation, he also admits it’s a very inefficient process but it obviously works for him!

Check out the video below:

The video for Superblood Wolfmoon is the first track that Ross has animated in full, usually just doing snippets, and it has a monochrome theme throughout, the video opens with the moon in all its glory and then cuts to the band in all their ballpoint sketched glory, you can instantly peg which character is which band member even with the simplicity and minimalist features they are given. The song itself is catchy, not to mention the raw guitar solo by McCready that gets the blood pumping but I can’t help but wonder if these vocals are, what to me feel, a little more low key than the Vedder we have come to know and love in an attempt to be more radio friendly? It’s a sound in the right direction for long standing PJ fans but they may wish to turn the volume up a bit on this one, the promise is definitely there, here’s hoping the new album delivers on it.
