Sophie Grey Is Not Waiting Anymore — She’s Putting You ‘On Hold’

by | May 2, 2025

Rising electro-pop artist Sophie Grey. is back with a brooding new single, On Hold, and it’s everything we’ve come to expect from the multi-talented producer, performer, and provocateur — shimmering synths, bold visuals, and an anthem for the digitally disenchanted. Out now with an equally cinematic music video, On Hold is a hypnotic blend of retro-futurism and raw emotion, delivered with Grey’s signature flair and fiercely independent spirit.

Entirely self-produced and mixed in ATMOS by 4-time GRAMMY®-winning engineer Robert Orton (Lady Gaga, Lana Del Rey, Charli XCX), On Hold is a synth-drenched power move — an unapologetic bop that confronts a modern dating epidemic: ghosting. The bassline pulses like an unanswered text, the glittering keys sparkle with tension, and Grey’s echoing vocals serve as both confession and confrontation.

“Being ghosted, being left on ‘delivered’, being left ON HOLD,” she shares. “These are scenarios that are just too common in our daily lives. I’m over it. Leave me ON HOLD, and see what happens.”

The accompanying video, directed by Maximilian Stafford, transports us into SOPHIE’s hyper-stylised world: an eerie office locked in a time warp, a corridor bathed in mystery, and a surreal, foil-covered set piece straight out of a Kubrick dream. She moves through the visual landscape like a fashion-forward femme fatale, serving look after look — from sharp tailoring to high-concept glam — a reflection of her artistry that bridges music, style, and storytelling.

This release follows her recent single Dirty Thoughts featuring Austin Brown, and continues the sonic lineage of her 2024 album Retro Electro — a project that cements SOPHIE’s place in the lineage of modern electro-pop innovators. Her sound draws from 80s new wave, soulful pop, and hip hop, all filtered through a classically-trained lens and shaped by her upbringing between Kansas City and Los Angeles.

A USC Thornton School of Music alumna and protégé of GRAMMY®-nominated icon Dr. Patrice Rushen, SOPHIE honed her chops not just behind the mic but behind the boards, engineering and producing her own material while working at LA’s legendary Village Recorder Studios.

Beyond her solo work, the singer is a powerhouse live performer. She’s toured with Lily Meola, appeared on Good Morning America playing keys for Shaggy, and is now preparing to open for none other than Sting on his European arena tour this summer. She’ll also be performing solo at SXSW London in June, as well as headlining shows in Amsterdam and London.
