Texas are celebrating the 30th anniversary of their landmark album White On Blonde with a special anniversary edition, a brand-new single, Another Way To Cry, and an extensive UK and European arena tour in 2027, including a major show at London’s The O2 on 27th October.
Originally released on 5th February 1997, White On Blonde became a defining moment in the Scottish band’s career. Certified six-times platinum in the UK, the album reached Number One on the UK Albums Chart and delivered five Top 10 singles, establishing Texas among the country’s most successful and distinctive acts.
The record arrived during the height of Britpop, but its blend of soul, trip-hop and accessible pop set it apart from the prevailing musical trends of the time. Tracks including Say What You Want, Halo, Black Eyed Boy and Put Your Arms Around Me helped make the album a commercial triumph, while its willingness to move beyond conventional pop-rock expectations gave it a sound that remains distinctive three decades later.
Reflecting on the album’s creation, frontwoman Sharleen Spiteri recalls the freedom the band enjoyed while working in Glasgow, where much of the record was made at her home.
“It didn’t feel risky because no-one at our label gave a shit,” she says. “We were in Glasgow, we made the album in my house and I did all the vocals in the coat cupboard. We had nothing to lose, and anyway, I didn’t want to fit in. If everybody’s doing something, I’m always running in the opposite direction and that’s always been the attitude — whether it’s walking on stage at Glastonbury, or with White On Blonde. It’s always been us saying: We will play our own tune. If you want to jump on, great. If you hate us, fine. But this is what we want to do.”
That independent spirit also shaped the band’s unexpected collaboration with Wu-Tang Clan on Say What You Want (All Day, Every Day), which earned Texas another Top 10 hit and demonstrated their willingness to take creative risks.
The anniversary edition will feature the previously unreleased Another Way To Cry, a new song that draws on the band’s enduring love of Northern Soul. Built around brass, strings and an expansive arrangement, the track brings a fresh dimension to the Texas sound while retaining the melodic strength that has underpinned their biggest hits.
Spiteri is confident the song can stand alongside the band’s established classics. “It’s a really good test for a new song if you play it up against the big hits; it’ll either sit up to them, or it fucking dies,” she says. “Another Way To Cry, you could put it in the setlist tomorrow with all the hits and it’ll stand its ground.”
The single arrives with a cinematic music video filmed in the Scottish Highlands and directed by Niall Trask. Starring Spiteri alongside longtime friend and acclaimed actor Robert Carlyle, the film pays homage to Paris, Texas, the Wim Wenders film that inspired the band’s name. The video brings together the landscape, imagery and emotional atmosphere associated with the film in a visual companion to the new track.
The 30th-anniversary release of White On Blonde is scheduled for 5 February 2027 through Play It Again Sam. The special edition will include sleeve notes by comedian and friend of the band Peter Kay, with several physical formats available, including an LP accompanied by a seven-inch single, a double-vinyl edition and a double-CD release, alongside digital versions.
The expanded tracklisting revisits the original album while offering fans a collection of rarities, demos, remixes and live recordings. Among the additional material are the Wu-Tang Clan remix of Say What You Want, demo versions of Black Eyed Boy, Halo and Mr. Haze, and a live performance of Say What You Want featuring Method Man at the 1997 BRIT Awards. The set also includes BBC session recordings, Another Way To Cry, and further archival material.
Alongside the anniversary celebration, Texas will return to arenas across the UK and Europe in autumn 2027. The 18-date tour begins at Aberdeen’s P&J Arena on 15 October, with further performances in Newcastle, Belfast, Dublin, Glasgow, Leeds, Cardiff, Brighton, London and Manchester, before the European leg continues into November. Special guests Del Amitri will join the band on all UK and Ireland dates.
With White On Blonde reaching a milestone anniversary and new music arriving alongside it, Texas are looking back at one of the most important records in their history while continuing to move forward. Spiteri hints that more is on the way: “It’s to be continued. Don’t worry, we won’t make you hold your breath too long…”
