Essex indie risers Black Lounge are making a decisive statement with their new single Welcome Home, a track that signals both a creative leap and the beginning of a new chapter for the quartet. As the first release from their forthcoming debut EP—and their first under Right Tracks Recordings, the label founded by industry figure Chris Wright—the song captures a band rapidly coming into their own.
Operating somewhere between the raw emotional pull of Wunderhorse and the sharp, stadium-ready cool of Arctic Monkeys, Black Lounge have been quietly building momentum through a string of self-released tracks. Welcome Home feels like the moment that buzz crystallises into something far more substantial.
Opening with a deceptive intimacy, the track initially leans into stripped-back, singer-songwriter territory before erupting into a dense, driving wall of sound. The band’s command of dynamics evokes shades of early Radiohead and Muse, while still carving out a distinctly modern indie identity. It’s a formula that pays off in a soaring, festival-ready hook built for mass singalongs.
At the centre of it all is frontman George Grant, whose vocal performance swings between full-throttle intensity and moments of vulnerability. Paired with Ben Gulik’s incisive lead guitar work, the track showcases a band that already sounds fully realised.
Speaking about the single, Grant explains: “Welcome Home to me is about being stuck in the same routine every day, living life on repeat and having little satisfaction. Not even home feels like it should anymore. It is a hopeful song though.”
The track was penned by Grant and brought to life in the studio with producer Danton Supple, known for his work with Coldplay and Suede, during sessions at the iconic RAK Studios.
Visually, Welcome Home is matched by a frenetic, stylised video directed by Marcus Kartal. Shot in Southend, the clip blends rapid-fire edits with performance footage, enhanced by a retro CRT scan effect that lends the visuals a gritty, nostalgic edge. “We wanted to really capture the madness of the song,” says Grant. “Marcus had the great idea of putting a CRT scan on the edit which gives it a retro grunge feel.”
Formed in 2024, Black Lounge’s current line-up—completed by Gulik (guitar), James Ladds (bass), and Jack Cassidy (drums)—marks a fresh era for the band. With BBC Introducing support, sold-out London shows, and festival appearances already under their belt, they’re now poised to take a significant step up.
Welcome Home offers just a glimpse of what’s to come on their debut EP, which promises a broad sonic palette ranging from introspective slow-burners to punchy indie-pop anthems. It’s a compelling introduction to a band tapping into the renewed appetite for early-2000s British indie—while pushing it forward on their own terms.
