Death Cab For Cutie are preparing to open a new chapter in their storied career with the release of their eleventh studio album, I Built You A Tower, arriving on 5th June via ANTI- Records. Ahead of the album’s release, the acclaimed indie rock outfit have shared one final preview in the form of the emotionally charged new single, Stone Over Water.
The track offers another glimpse into what promises to be one of the band’s most personal and reflective records to date. Built around the themes of emotional resilience and self-deception, Stone Over Water explores the struggle of convincing both yourself and those around you that everything is fine when, beneath the surface, it clearly is not. The song continues the deeply introspective tone that runs throughout the forthcoming album.
The release follows a busy week for the band, who recently performed album lead single Riptides on US television. The song has already become another significant milestone for the group, marking their ninth No.1 on the Billboard Adult Alternative Airplay chart and demonstrating that, nearly three decades into their career, Death Cab For Cutie remain as relevant and resonant as ever.
Produced and engineered by renowned producer John Congleton, I Built You A Tower represents something of a reset for the Seattle-based band. It is their first album since leaving Atlantic Records and returning to the independent spirit that originally defined their rise. Recorded across a series of concentrated sessions in Los Angeles alongside home recordings from various band members, the album was assembled with a sense of urgency and creative freedom that echoes the group’s earliest years.
For frontman Ben Gibbard, the album was born from a period of profound personal and professional upheaval. While simultaneously fronting both Death Cab For Cutie and The Postal Service during their hugely successful anniversary tours, Gibbard found himself navigating personal challenges away from the spotlight. The concept of the “tower” became a metaphorical place to contain grief and loss — a structure built to hold emotional pain while life continues around it.
That emotional core runs throughout the album, but rather than dwelling solely in darkness, I Built You A Tower ultimately seeks renewal. The record examines how we carry the weight of our past while attempting to build something new from its foundations. It’s a theme that feels particularly fitting for a band celebrating nearly 30 years together.
Recent anniversary tours celebrating landmark albums Transatlanticism and Plans helped reconnect the band with the chemistry and instinct that first brought them together. Rather than revisiting old glories, those performances appear to have reignited the creative spark that fuels this latest collection of songs. The result is an album that embraces the essence of Death Cab For Cutie’s songwriting while continuing to evolve their sound.
As anticipation builds for the album’s release, fans in the UK and Ireland won’t have to wait long to hear the new material live. Death Cab For Cutie will embark on an extensive UK and European tour this autumn, bringing I Built You A Tower to audiences across both sides of the Irish Sea.
