Death Cab For Cutie have unveiled their latest single, Punching The Flowers, taken from their forthcoming album I Built You A Tower, due for release on 5th June.
The new track arrives alongside a video directed by Jason Lester and offers a sharp, angular return to the band’s more immediate guitar-driven sound. Frontman Benjamin Gibbard describes the song as an exploration of emotional paralysis and the risks of stepping beyond familiarity. Inspired by a real-life moment involving a child lashing out in frustration, the track reframes the image into a broader metaphor about feeling trapped by something once perceived as beautiful.
The upcoming record marks the band’s 11th studio album and signals a significant shift, as the group return to the independent scene after two decades working within the major label system. Produced and engineered by John Congleton, the album was recorded over an intense three-week period across multiple locations, including Los Angeles and the band members’ home studios in the Pacific Northwest.
Consisting of Gibbard alongside Nicholas Harmer, Jason McGerr, Dave Depper and Zac Rae, the band channel recent experiences into the new material. The album’s themes are shaped in part by a period of personal upheaval for Gibbard, set against the backdrop of demanding live commitments that saw him simultaneously fronting both Death Cab and The Postal Service on a major anniversary tour.
I Built You A Tower explores how people process grief and emotional strain, with the titular concept representing a psychological space built to contain loss. The record also reflects a renewed creative clarity within the band, drawing on the energy of their recent live shows while reconnecting with the instincts that defined their early years.
To support the release, Death Cab For Cutie will head out on a UK and Ireland tour this autumn, joined by support act Pool Kids.
