Fine Young Cannibals are marking four decades since their formation with the release of FYC40, a career-spanning anthology celebrating their brief but extraordinary legacy. The collection arrives on November 21st via London Records and is available to pre-order now.
Formed in 1985 by former The Beat members David Steele and Andy Cox alongside frontman Roland Gift, Fine Young Cannibals made an instant impact with debut single Johnny Come Home. Their self-titled debut album showcased a sharp, soulful new act unafraid to stretch beyond the 2 Tone scene. Four years later, their sophomore album The Raw & The Cooked catapulted them onto the global stage. Home to Billboard #1 hits She Drives Me Crazy and Good Thing, as well as their inspired cover of the Buzzcocks’ Ever Fallen In Love, it topped charts on both sides of the Atlantic, sold over five million copies, and earned the band BRIT Awards, an Ivor Novello, and GRAMMY® nominations.
Although the group disbanded in 1996 after releasing final single The Flame, their music has remained a constant cultural touchstone. Johnny Come Home recently featured in Andrew Haigh’s acclaimed film All Of Us Strangers, while She Drives Me Crazy played a pivotal role in season four of FX’s The Bear. This year, the same track was also chosen as the centrepiece of Chanel’s global handbag campaign starring Dua Lipa and Jennie from BLACKPINK.
Now, FYC40 offers the definitive Fine Young Cannibals collection. Available across multiple formats, the release ranges from a 12-track single LP and CD to an expanded 24-track double LP and an extensive double CD set featuring brand-new and rare remixes. For collectors, the Deluxe 4CD/DVD box set is the ultimate celebration — spanning both studio albums, a wealth of remixes, promo videos, a restored Live At The Paramount concert from 1989, and classic BBC performances from Top Of The Pops, The Old Grey Whistle Test and Wogan.
Among the highlights are rare mixes from the likes of Soul II Soul’s Jazzie B, Norman Cook, Arthur Baker, and Prince Paul, alongside brand-new reimaginings from Flight Facilities, The Reflex, and DJ Q. The latter’s fresh remix of Ever Fallen In Love — a bass-driven UK garage rework — is out now.
To mark the anniversary, Roland Gift will also return to the stage with two special headline shows this autumn: London Palladium (2nd October) and Birmingham Symphony Hall (12th November).
Four decades since they first broke through, Fine Young Cannibals’ blend of soulful vocals, sharp songwriting, and fearless experimentation continues to resonate — and FYC40 captures their legacy in all its richness.
