Gabriella Cilmi shares her new single Pieces, the latest preview of her forthcoming album Pure Love, due 9th October and marking her first full-length release in 13 years.
The new track offers another glimpse into an album that represents a significant new chapter for the Australian singer-songwriter. Pure Love finds Cilmi stepping away from the expectations that accompanied her extraordinary early success and embracing a more instinctive, organic approach to songwriting and performance.

Cilmi was just 16 when Sweet About Me became an international phenomenon. The 2007 single topped the charts in multiple countries, reached the Top 10 across Europe and Australia, and became the UK’s most-played song of the year. Its success propelled debut album Lessons To Be Learned to international success and earned Cilmi six ARIA Awards, alongside Gold certification in the UK.
The intensity of that early success was followed by two internationally successful albums before Cilmi chose to step away from the spotlight. She remained based in London, however, continuing to write, collaborate and perform while allowing herself the space to develop without the expectations surrounding her early career.
That period away from the mainstream spotlight ultimately became central to the making of Pure Love. “Pure Love was about unlearning everything I’d known, throwing away perfectionism and trying to please people,” says Cilmi. “This record is just me — unfiltered and raw.”
Pieces captures that philosophy through a warm, live-sounding arrangement inspired by classic 1960s soul and R&B. Live instrumentation provides the track’s foundation, while Cilmi’s rich lead vocal and swooning harmonies bring a contemporary edge to its timeless influences.
Lyrically, the song deals with the uncomfortable realisation that moving on from a relationship is not necessarily as straightforward as it seems. Seeing a former partner with somebody else can reopen feelings that appeared to have been resolved, triggering memories, questions and emotions that return with unexpected force. “Pieces is about seeing the person you once loved with somebody else and the flood of emotions and questions that comes with that,” Cilmi explains.
The song also reflects a deliberate decision to place female creativity at the centre of the new album. Cilmi co-writes Pieces with Julia Church, the songwriter and artist whose credits include collaborations with John Summit, SLANDER and San Holo. “For this record I really wanted to have the female gaze at the forefront so I purposefully seeked out female collaborators,” Cilmi says. “I wrote this one with Julia Church who is one of the most brilliant artists and songwriters I’ve ever worked with.”
The track’s sonic direction was also influenced by Cilmi’s listening at the time, with Roberta Flack’s seminal First Take providing a particular source of inspiration. “I was listening to Roberta Flack’s record First Take at the time and that really inspired the mood of the song,” she adds. Production comes from Peter Miles, whose work with artists including Dodie and Orla Gartland complements the album’s deliberately natural approach.
Pieces follows the previously released YRU Hanging Around and Pure Love, which have introduced audiences to the sound and spirit of Cilmi’s forthcoming record. Her return has already included support from BBC Radio 2 and Radio 4, an appearance on Sunday Brunch and a performance at The Great Escape.
The album itself was recorded with a full band playing live to tape at Middle Farm Studios in Devon, placing musicianship and performance at the centre of the process. Soul, blues and classic pop provide its foundations, while influences ranging from Roberta Flack and Janis Joplin to Carole King can be heard across the record. Yet Pure Love is not intended as a nostalgia trip. Instead, Cilmi uses those classic influences as the foundation for music that reflects where she is now — more assured, direct and unconcerned with chasing perfection.
The result is an album made with an emphasis on organic performances rather than layers of studio polish. After more than a decade away from releasing a full album, Cilmi returns on her own terms, with the experience and perspective that comes from having spent much of that time writing and developing away from the glare of the mainstream. “Unfiltered and raw” is perhaps the simplest description of the record, but it also captures the significance of Pure Love. Cilmi is no longer the teenage newcomer who unexpectedly found herself at the centre of international pop success. This is an artist reclaiming the freedom to make music according to her own instincts.
The album’s release will be followed by Cilmi’s first full UK headline tour since 2014. The six-date run in November will take in Leeds, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Manchester, London and Birmingham, culminating in a headline performance at London’s Bush Hall on 24th November. The tour represents another important milestone in Cilmi’s return, bringing the songs from Pure Love into intimate venues after their carefully crafted studio journey.
With Pieces adding another soulful dimension to the album and Pure Love just weeks away, Gabriella Cilmi’s comeback is proving to be less about revisiting the past than finally having the freedom to define her future.
