GUV has shared a new single, Warmer Than Gold, the latest offering from his forthcoming album of the same name, due for release on 30th January. The project of guitarist, songwriter and producer Ben Cook, GUV returns here with a track that perfectly encapsulates the energy and direction of this new chapter. The title song pairs effervescent hooks with danceable beats and swirling guitar textures, balancing immediacy with depth and motion. It follows earlier single Let Your Hands Go and further showcases an album shaped by rhythm, melody and restless creativity.
Warmer Than Gold has been created with a wide network of collaborators, including James Matthew Seven, Darcy Baylis, Hatchie and Meg Mills of Turnstile, among many others. The record blends Britpop, baggy grooves, classic indie pop and first-wave shoegaze into a cohesive, forward-moving sound that reflects Cook’s lifelong immersion in music and culture. Drawing on experiences growing up between Toronto and England, the album feels both personal and panoramic, rooted in memory but driven by momentum.
Speaking on the album’s themes, Cook describes Warmer Than Gold as existing between two worlds — one shaped by excess and status, the other by escape, imagination and movement. The songs travel through cities, family histories and inner reflections, capturing the feeling of constant motion and the search for something meaningful beneath the surface.
Musically, the album marks an evolution in Cook’s approach. While retaining the sharp melodic instincts that have defined his previous releases, Warmer Than Gold leans more heavily into breakbeats and rhythmic propulsion, inspired by late-’80s and early-’90s British rave and alternative music. Much of the record was written and recorded across multiple continents, embracing spontaneity and a one-take spirit that gives the songs a raw, immediate feel.
The new single arrives alongside a video that complements its sense of movement and reflection, and sets the tone for an album that feels both expansive and tightly focused. With Warmer Than Gold, GUV continues to evolve without losing sight of what makes his songwriting so compelling: big choruses, emotional clarity and an unmistakable sense of drive.
