With its pensive rhythm, reverb-soaked slide guitar and frontman James Bettis’ haunting vocal delivery, Slide Off The Earth draws comparisons to the shadowy atmospherics of The Jesus and Mary Chain and Echo & the Bunnymen. The track signals a bold new sonic chapter for the band, pushing towards rawer, more open textures under the guidance of producer Chris Barker (Willie J Healey, Premium Leisure).

Slide Off The Earth ended up setting the tone for the whole album,” Bettis explains. “The minute I wrote it, I knew I wanted Chris to produce it. That choice really shaped everything, pushing us towards a more roomy, real, and raw sound. The song’s about wanting to just walk away from it all—quitting the daily grind and disappearing with my wife, who’s also my best friend. It’s that feeling of being fed up and ready to let everything go.”

Thematically, the song delves into both escapism and existential weight, with its second verse exploring disappointment, fatigue, and the search for something greater. Its expansive sound mirrors those emotions, blending desert-like slide guitar tones with soaring harmonies to create a darkly cinematic atmosphere.

The Fire That’s Tearing Through Our Home sees Bettis joined by Melissa Marshall (synth/keys), Tim Lucas (drums), and Everton Barbato (bass). Across its 50 minutes, the record promises dreamlike soundscapes, huge hooks and reflective lyricism that confronts anxiety, fragility, and the beauty of human emotion.

Having recently road-tested new material on tour with Black Foxxes, Kanadia will mark the album’s release with a hometown launch show at O2 Academy Oxford on 5th September, with further live dates to be announced soon.

Now, umbrellas and storm clouds in tow, it felt fitting that Lane’s new project, a record that navigates through storms towards moments of calm, should arrive on a night like this.
