Los Angeles screamo trio Knumears have shared their blistering new single My Name, the latest preview of their forthcoming debut album Directions, due out on 3rd April.
Following the release of lead single Fade Away, My Name doubles down on the band’s unrelenting intensity. Opening with a blown-out bassline, the track quickly detonates into shredded vocals and distortion-soaked guitars, veering sharply between melody and chaos. It’s a visceral showcase of Knumears’ ability to fuse ‘90s skramz roots with the punch and urgency of modern hardcore.
Comprised of guitarist/vocalist Matthew Cole, bassist/vocalist Dante Garcia II and drummer Frankie Lopez, Knumears have built their reputation on cathartic live shows and a steady stream of emotionally charged releases. Since forming in 2021, the trio have toured extensively, carrying forward the spirit of screamo’s most impassioned corners — whether labelled skramz, post-hardcore or emoviolence — while carving out a sound distinctly their own.
Recorded with producer Jack Shirley at Atomic Garden, Directions captures a band channelling raw emotion into something urgent and immediate. Cole describes their connection to hardcore as foundational: growing up on music with something real to say, he explains, shaped both their creative outlook and the depth of feeling that drives their songwriting.
The album, which features ten tracks including One Light, Sunshine, Breaking Ground and Friendly Face, explores the uncertainty of early adulthood — the tension between youth and what comes next. Lyrically, Cole digs into themes of familial love and personal growth, reframing the idea of a “love song” to include the bonds formed with parents and grandparents as much as romantic partners. The result is a record steeped in vulnerability, expressed through explosive instrumentation and wildly shifting dynamics.
Directions arrives on 3rd April, with pre-orders available now. To celebrate, the band will host a record release show in Los Angeles this May, alongside a run of Australian dates in March.
