Rising alt-pop storyteller Liang Lawrence has shared her shimmering new single A Day Off In Margaritaville, a vibrant, emotionally layered track that marks the first offering from her upcoming EP It’s A Funny Thing, due later this year via The Other Songs.
Effortlessly blending introspective lyricism with upbeat, west coast-tinged instrumentation, the track captures Liang’s ability to mine life’s most uncertain moments for connection, catharsis and clarity. “If Life Is A Highway was just a little more existential and anxious, this is what that song would be,” she explains of the track’s contemplative spirit.
Written during a rare break on her first U.S. tour — holed up in a rain-soaked Margaritaville hotel surrounded by Hawaiian shirts and cocktail umbrellas — Liang channelled the moment’s surreal melancholy into one of her most poignant and melodically engaging songs yet. “I was so overwhelmed with excitement, nerves and imposter syndrome,” she reflects. “I wanted this song to soundtrack that period of my life. A means of allowing people to relish in the moments where we feel completely burnt out, lonely, and unsure if we’re doing anything right.”
The single continues a remarkable run for the Berlin-born, globally raised artist. Over the past year, Liang has toured internationally with HONNE, performed alongside Bastille at London’s legendary 100 Club, and earned glowing radio support from BBC tastemakers including Daniel Pascoe, Jess Iszatt, Alyx Holcombe and Mollie King. Her breakout single Backseat became a BBC Introducing Track Of The Week, and she was handpicked to perform at BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Liverpool earlier this year.
With over 4.5 million streams and close to a quarter of a million monthly Spotify listeners, Liang’s ascent is gathering serious pace. Earlier this year, she was nominated for the 2025 Ivor Novello Rising Star Award, a clear recognition of her lyrical prowess and growing cultural impact.
Fans eager to see Liang live won’t have long to wait. She hosted, curated and headlined an intimate showcase at Folklore, Hoxton on 15th July, joined by Hetta Falzon and Jo Hill for a night of new music, conversation and surprises and that incredible night will be followed by a headline UK tour this autumn, including a major London date at EartH, Hackney.
Born in Berlin and raised across eight different countries, Liang Lawrence’s borderless upbringing informs her emotionally nuanced songwriting and diverse sound. Her 2023 debut EP letters to myself amassed over a million streams within weeks, while 2024’s follow-up What’s Dead And Gone cemented her place as one of the UK’s most promising indie-pop voices. Combining vulnerability, wit and global perspective, Liang continues to carve out a space entirely her own.
