One of the best things about The Wave Pictures, besides their impressive output (15 studio albums and countless EPs and singles in their 10+ years together) is David Tattersall’s distinctive voice. It will remind you of other bands while being utterly unique; a bit yelpy and undeniably earnest. He tells stories of awkward people and funny situations that totally draw you in.

Their latest album Great Big Flamingo Burning Moon was produced and co-written by lo-fi garage-rock legend Billy Childish, who used to frequently play this very venue before forgoing live shows altogether (allegedly because modern sound systems don’t get it right) which is a great shame. The band has also worked with Darren Hayman (on 2010’s Beer in the Breakers) which seems like a natural fit given Hayman’s sweetly nerdy approach to singing and writing.

Tonight The Wave Pictures play a few songs off their new album warning us about a ‘punkier’ song where people started moshing in their last gig on The Fire Alarm. Older tracks Spaghetti, Tropic and particularly The Woods go down great with this crowd of fans who are singing along to every song.

Having played together for so long , Tattersal, Franic Rozycki on bass and drummer Jonny Helm have a great dynamic onstage, that makes watching them a real pleasure. And let it be said that the DIY/ punk ethos has never been embodied as succinctly as The Wave Pictures mugs for sale at the unattended merch table with a sign ‘made by Jonny’s dad’. So cool!
