New Yorker Emily King’s Return Is No False Start

by | Apr 5, 2023

New York City-based singer-songwriter Emily King has shared False Start, the third single from her highly anticipated fifth studio album Special Occasiondue out May 5 via ATO Records. Acclaimed, Brooklyn-based labelmate Nick Hakim joins King on the track, a stripped-down, soulful offering of an unfiltered yet gently spellbinding meditation on the pain of unsuccessfully trying to extract yourself from a seemingly comfortable relationship.

“I’d recently experienced the feeling of going against my instincts, trying to quiet a voice inside me,” Emily King shares. “I wrote the song one day in the studio in LA. I sat in front of the microphone and started with a line I’d had for so long, and the rest of the song all came out. It was very cathartic.”

Listen to False Start below:

The new body of work is King’s first album in 4 years, following her multi-Grammy-nominated Scenery. The album Special Occasion features eleven dynamic tracks, including previously released singles This Year and Medal all produced by longtime collaborator Jeremy Most. Across the album, the 37-year-old shares a real-time exploration of the endless dimensions of heartbreak. Using music as a means of meditation and healing, King works through the most overwhelming emotions with ineffable grace and resilience.

Coinciding with Special Occasion’s release, King will embark on a month-long North American headlining tour, kicking off on 5th May in South Orange, NJ. The tour will see King, supported by Joseph Solomon, visit esteemed venues including Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, Los Angeles’ Wiltern, Atlanta’s Buckhead Theater, and more. The tour concludes on 31st May with a hometown show at New York’s Terminal 5. Ticket info can be found over at: https://www.emilykingmusic.com.
