New York’s Cults Release Fifth Studio Album To The Ghosts

by | Jul 26, 2024

Acclaimed alt-pop duo Cults have released their fifth studio album, To The Ghosts, out now via Imperial. The multiplatinum New York duo comprised of multi-instrumentalists Madeline Follin and Brian Oblivion temper shadowy cinematic soundscapes with flickering melodic singalongs, perfecting their signature vision with this expansive and anticipated new record – their first new full length studio LP in four years.

Speaking on the album, Brian said “Without knowing it, we’ve spent our whole career building a world of our own, we just try to create the emotion that we want to feel. This record is another piece of the picture, but the picture isn’t done yet. We’d be in Cults no matter what. It’s the way we live our lives.”

Madeline adds, “This is the first record where I would pick up the microphone and sing whatever I was feeling. The vocals and the lyrics really helped inform the direction rather than the other way around. Every track brings me back to what I was going through at the time.” Listen to the new LP here.

Highlights on To The Ghosts include Left My Keys, Crybaby, Hung The Moon and Onions. Cults kick off their U.S. headline tour in August, with a stop at Chicago’s Lollapalooza on 4th August. From September they’re supporting Vampire Weekend on their extensive run of shows, and then head to the UK and EU in November for headline dates.

The creative process for the new album began during the pandemic when they started writing music on weekdays from 10am-5pm, with no deadlines or distractions. Written and recorded in Brian’s apartment, they later brought the music to Los Angeles for further collaboration with longtime producer and trusted creative confidant Shane Stoneback. To The Ghosts was co-produced by Cults & Shane Stoneback, mixed by John Congleton, and mastered by Heba Kadry NYC.

True outliers, Cults persist as the rare phenomenon equally comfortable collaborating with The Weeknd, rap titan J. Cole on his 6x-platinum smash She Knows, and maverick indie director Jim Jarmusch. Their latest remix of Taylor Swift’s Fortnight caught fans by surprise.

Upcoming UK tour dates:

NOVEMBER
4th – Manchester, Manchester Academy 3
5th – London, Electric Brixton
6th – Brighton, Concorde2

The Saints @ Electric ballroom (Peter McDonnell)

The Miraculous Second Coming Of The Saints ’73-’78 At London’s Electric Ballroom

There are comebacks, and then there are resurrections. For punk devotees, the return of The Saints ’73–’78 — the latest live incarnation of the legendary Melbourne outfit — firmly belonged in the latter category. With original members Ed Kuepper and Ivor Hay at the helm, and an inspired line-up completed by Mick Harvey, Mark Arm, Peter Oxley, and a three-piece brass section led by Terry Edwards, the Electric Ballroom felt less like a gig and more like a communal rite of appreciation for one of punk’s most quietly revolutionary bands.
