Singer-songwriter SoJo transforms personal heartbreak into an uplifting declaration of independence with her new single Arena For Love, released ahead of her debut album, Feeling Free, arriving on 4th December.
A celebration of rediscovering confidence, embracing vulnerability and finding the courage to start again, Arena For Love introduces what SoJo describes as heartfelt pop. Driven by an impassioned vocal and an infectious, chorus-led arrangement, the track captures the moment when heartbreak gives way to possibility, encouraging listeners not to let fear dictate what comes next.
The song’s message is rooted in SoJo’s own experience. A mother of two teenage daughters, she was navigating the breakdown of her marriage when an unexpected moment of inspiration began to change her direction. Playing one of her favourite songs, Irene Cara’s Flashdance… What A Feeling, she found new meaning in its message of following your passion and making things happen.
Inspired to take a songwriting course despite having no previous musical training, SoJo discovered a creative outlet through which she could process the upheaval in her life and begin to rebuild her sense of self. What started as a personal escape gradually developed into a new musical journey.
The inspiration behind Arena For Love came from another important moment during that period. While immersing herself in self-development books, SoJo encountered the Man in the Arena passage in Brené Brown’s Daring Greatly, which draws on Theodore Roosevelt’s famous 1910 speech. Its central idea – that life requires the courage to step forward, take risks and embrace the possibility of failure – became the foundation for the single.
SoJo explains: “Heartbreak can make you want to put a massive ‘KEEP OUT’ sign around your heart. Arena For Love is about not letting fear make your decisions, whether that’s being open to love again or going after anything else you want in life. The whole ‘arena’ idea has made me want to live more fearlessly and just go for things. Plus, it gave me a brilliant excuse to wear a gladiator costume!”
Written solely by SoJo, Arena For Love is produced by Kevin Thorpe, with guitar contributions from Trevor Varri. Its direct, uplifting pop sensibility provides a soundtrack to moving beyond difficult experiences, while its personal message offers reassurance to anyone facing a major change in their life.
Songwriting has since become the driving force behind SoJo’s creative reinvention. Her debut single, Keep Calm And Think About Peter Andre, emerged in 2023, inspired by a phrase on a mug gifted to her by her sister. Subsequent releases I’m On Fire, Hide and Joy have continued to document different chapters of her personal journey, turning individual experiences into relatable pop songs.
Now, with Feeling Free, SoJo brings those stories together in her first full-length album. Promising a deeper and more uncompromising account of the experiences that have shaped her, the record represents the culmination of a journey that began with heartbreak but has developed into something far more positive: a renewed sense of purpose, creative freedom and the confidence to take on whatever comes next.
