When Road To Rouen first hit the shelves on 15th August 2005, it caught many fans off-guard. Gone was the high-octane fizz of I Should Coco and Life On Other Planets, replaced by lush orchestral arrangements, extended song structures, and a more contemplative mood. Written and recorded during an isolated winter in the French countryside, the record reflected a band deliberately stepping outside their comfort zone.

Bassist Mick Quinn recalls: “From a lost winter in the French countryside we attempted an experimental, uplifting record far outside our comfort zone. Road To Rouen became a compact joy that still holds a cherished place in our hearts. Vive la différence.”

The album’s singles — Low C, Fin, and the now-classic St. Petersburg — showcased Gaz Coombes’ maturing songwriting and the band’s ability to shift gears without losing their identity. It reached #9 on the UK Albums Chart and, in the years since, has been repeatedly cited by fans as one of their most personal and enduring works.

The anniversary reissue will be available digitally, as a Gatefold 2LP in Petrol and Forest Green vinyl with printed inner sleeves, and as a 2CD digisleeve. Both physical editions feature a booklet with fresh liner notes by broadcaster Mark Radcliffe, offering new insight into a record often considered a turning point in the band’s career. Alongside the remaster, fans can expect rare live recordings capturing the band during their 2005–2006 tours, a period that saw Supergrass move from frenetic festival headliners to masters of more nuanced, slow-burning performances.

Formed in Oxford in 1993 by Gaz Coombes, Mick Quinn, and Danny Goffey — later joined by keyboardist Rob CoombesSupergrass became one of the defining acts of the Britpop era and beyond, selling millions of records, earning six Top 10 albums, and collecting Brit, Q, NME, and Ivor Novello Awards.

The Road To Rouen 20th Anniversary Edition is available to pre-order now — a fitting tribute to an album that proved Supergrass were never afraid to take the scenic route.
