British alternative rock heavyweights Basement have announced their long-awaited return. Wired, their first new album in over eight years, lands on 8th May, marking a reunion with the label that helped shape their early career.
Across 12 tracks, Wired promises a rekindling of the unfiltered emotion and instinctive creativity that has defined the band at their best. To preview the record, the quintet — Andrew Fisher (vocals), Alex Henery and Ronan Crix (guitars), Duncan Stewart (bass) and James Fisher (drums) — have unveiled two contrasting new singles: the urgent, high-impact title track Wired and the brooding, bass-driven Broken By Design.
Wired is arguably the most immediate Basement have ever sounded — needle-sharp guitars cut through a pounding drumbeat, building toward a towering hook that finds Andrew Fisher delivering one of his most commanding vocal performances to date. By contrast, Broken By Design pulls back into moodier territory, dusky and reflective yet still carrying the unmistakable melodic pull that has long set the band apart.
Fisher explains that Wired explores the feeling of being conditioned to behave in certain ways, with emotions inevitably surfacing whether by choice or force. The track was nearly shelved before being revived and eventually becoming a standout moment in both recording and performance. Broken By Design, meanwhile, wrestles with the frustration of giving everything to something destined to fail — and the growth that follows. It’s also a nod to the band’s renewed commitment to communication and rediscovering the joy that first brought them together.
Determined to make Wired their most decisive artistic statement yet, Basement spent years refining the songs before entering the studio. Once ready, they teamed up with powerhouse producer John Congleton, known for his work with St. Vincent and Mannequin Pussy, to fully realise their vision. The result is an album that feels both precise and volatile — imperfections embraced, dynamics heightened, and every idea given room to breathe.
Since forming in 2009, Basement’s trajectory has been anything but predictable. Their 2011 debut I Wish You Could Stay Here planted them firmly in the post-hardcore wave of the early 2010s, but the band disbanded just as their influence began to grow. When they reformed in 2014, they returned to an even larger audience, building on the success of Colourmeinkindness, Promise Everything and Beside Myself.
Following a period of reflection during the pandemic — and a reassessment of the pressures that came with major label life — Basement regrouped without outside interference, rediscovering the chemistry that had always powered them. As work on LP5 gathered momentum, their track Covet unexpectedly went viral over a decade after its release, earning Gold certification in 2024 and introducing the band to a new generation of fans.
Now, with Wired, Basement once again find themselves re-emerging bigger and more vital than ever — a band renewed, refocused and unafraid to take bold creative swings.
