A deeply personal and emotionally resonant collection, the 11-track record moves fluidly between grief and hope, blending indie-rock energy with moments of intimate alt-folk reflection. At its core, Spectacular Denial is an exploration of loss—written in the wake of her father’s passing—and the complex, often non-linear journey that follows.

Rather than presenting grief as something with a clear beginning and end, Smyrk leans into its unpredictability. The album unfolds in waves, shifting from moments of despair to flashes of light, mirroring the reality of navigating profound loss. It’s a theme that runs throughout the record, from the fragile introspection of Line By Line—written mid-flight in a moment of quiet inspiration—to the punchy, lo-fi-tinged This Is Going To Get Worse, which channels both emotional weight and indie-pop immediacy.

Produced by Anna Laverty, the album captures a raw, live energy, with many tracks recorded in the studio in real time. That immediacy allows Smyrk’s songwriting and vocals to take centre stage, balancing delicacy with a commanding presence.

Musically, Spectacular Denial sits at the intersection of indie, alt-pop and folk, drawing subtle inspiration from artists such as Phoebe Bridgers and Hozier, while carving out a space that feels distinctly her own. Tracks like Skin Thinner highlight that duality—pairing upbeat instrumentation with deeply vulnerable lyricism, as Smyrk reflects on breaking through emotional numbness to reconnect with the world around her.

Having already road-tested much of the material on tour, Smyrk has seen first-hand how these songs resonate. Her live performances have become spaces of shared experience, where audiences connect not just with the music, but with the emotions behind it.
