After more than a decade of silence, enigmatic electronic duo Boards Of Canada have officially announced their long-awaited fifth studio album, Inferno, set for release on 29th May.
Comprised of brothers Michael Sandison and Marcus Eoin, the Scottish outfit have remained one of electronic music’s most elusive and influential acts, making Inferno their first full-length release in thirteen years. The announcement arrives with a sense of mystique that has long defined the duo’s output, accompanied by a cryptic visual teaser that hints at the album’s conceptual depth.
Spanning 18 tracks, Inferno promises a sprawling sonic journey that continues the pair’s legacy of blending analogue warmth with unsettling, otherworldly textures. Track titles such as Prophecy At 1420 MHz, Hydrogen Helium Lithium Leviathan, and Somewhere Right Now In The Future suggest a record rooted in cosmic themes, scientific curiosity, and the duo’s signature fascination with memory, time, and the unknown.
The album’s physical formats reflect the same attention to detail that has made their releases so revered among fans and collectors. Inferno will be available as a limited-edition red translucent double vinyl housed in a triple gatefold sleeve complete with a 16-page booklet, alongside standard black vinyl, CD, and digital editions.
Since emerging in the late ‘90s, Boards Of Canada have carved out a singular space within electronic music, influencing generations of artists with their hazy, nostalgic soundscapes and cryptic storytelling. Their return with Inferno marks not just a new chapter, but a significant moment for fans who have waited patiently for the duo’s next transmission.
While details surrounding the album’s themes remain characteristically sparse, the scale of Inferno—both in length and ambition—suggests a project that could stand among their most expansive works to date.
