Global flamenco icons Gipsy Kings featuring founder Tonino Baliardo have unveiled their vibrant new single Historia, the title track from their forthcoming album, due out on 15th May.
With over 25 million albums sold, a GRAMMY® Award to their name and decades of sold-out tours behind them, the group continue to honour and evolve the rich traditions of flamenco and Catalan gipsy culture that first took shape on the streets, at weddings and in bars in Arles, France in 1979.
Historia encapsulates everything that has made the band a global phenomenon: jubilant rhythms, impassioned vocals, jazzy flourishes and Baliardo’s unmistakable guitar work. The track carries the same exuberant spirit that propelled classics like Bamboléo and Djobi, Djoba to international acclaim, while reflecting the wide-ranging musical influences gathered across a lifetime of worldwide touring.
“I have always wanted to record an album where the music that has influenced my life as a Gipsy is reflected,” says Baliardo. “My music has no borders, and our music is universal. I came up with the title ‘Historia’ because it means what has happened in the past. I wanted to create an album with all the different musical influences I have experienced over the years travelling and performing around the world. The tracks on Historia cross over from rhumba, pop, dance, jazz, and of course have the passion, spirit and love of Gipsy Kings music.”
Family remains central to the new record. Baliardo’s sons, Cosso and Mikael, contributed to the writing and recording process, while his grandson Milan suggested the title for the track Big Bang. Another song, Cielo, is dedicated to the memory of his brother Paco, one of the original members of the band, who passed away during the recording sessions. The album was introduced with lead single Señorita.
Gipsy Kings featuring Tonino Baliardo begin their Historia tour in North America before heading across Europe throughout the year, promising the fiery, celebratory live show that has defined their career.
