Rising alt-rock newcomer Kind Villain is making a bold first impression with the release of his latest single I’m A Little Off, a deeply personal and defiant anthem that explores neurodiversity with honesty and bite.
The project of 21-year-old Tampa Bay musician Ev Frederick, Kind Villain blends gritty emo, pop-punk urgency and raw emotional storytelling into a sound that feels both immediate and unfiltered. With I’m A Little Off, Frederick leans fully into that identity, delivering a track that celebrates individuality while confronting the isolation that can come with feeling different.
Driven by punchy guitars and anthemic energy, the single captures the push and pull between self-doubt and self-acceptance. Its first-person perspective reads like a diary entry set to full volume, with Frederick embracing the idea that being “a little off” is not a flaw, but a defining strength. The track was co-written with multi-platinum producer Paul Trust, adding a polished edge to its otherwise unrestrained emotional core.
Frederick describes the song as his most personal work to date, shaped by lifelong experiences of social anxiety and feeling out of step with those around him. Yet, in contrast, the stage has always been where he feels most at home—a duality that feeds directly into the intensity of his music.
The newly released video for the track, directed by Lindsay Winter, strips things back to focus purely on performance. Eschewing narrative in favour of direct, unfiltered expression, it mirrors the vulnerability of the song itself, placing Frederick front and centre as he channels its message with unflinching conviction.
Kind Villain’s journey to this point has been anything but conventional. Cutting his teeth in local rock venues from a young age, Frederick built his reputation through high-energy live performances, tackling everything from pop-punk staples to classic rock. That early immersion in live music continues to inform his approach today, with a growing reputation for intense, emotionally charged shows.
Since launching the project in 2021, he has steadily carved out a space that pulls from across the alternative spectrum—touching on emo, post-hardcore, alt-pop and beyond—while maintaining a strong sense of identity. With previous releases earning radio play across North America and recognition in regional music awards, momentum is clearly building.
Now turning his attention to international audiences, Kind Villain is set to introduce his music to UK fans for the first time, with plans for a debut tour later this year.
