Anglo-American alt-rock icons Placebo have announced This Search For Meaning, a four-disc deluxe collection arriving 12th September via SO Recordings. The package offers a comprehensive portrait of the band’s current creative era, combining introspective documentary filmmaking with live performance energy and exclusive music content.

At the heart of this release is the documentary This Search For Meaning, directed by award-winning Scottish filmmaker Oscar Sansom. First released theatrically in 2023, the film delves deep into Placebo’s creative psyche, offering an unfiltered look at the themes that define their music: alienation, identity, existential struggle, and socio-political critique.

The film includes newly recorded live performances of tracks from Never Let Me Go, captured at London’s historic Twickenham Film Studios, interwoven with unseen archival footage and rare moments from the band’s 25+ year history — including their collaborative and personal connection with David Bowie, a formative influence and long-time supporter of the group.

Contributions from fellow artists and admirers such as Shirley Manson (Garbage), Robbie Williams, Yungblud, Joe Talbot (IDLES), Rebecca Lucy Taylor (Self Esteem), Benedict Cumberbatch, and artist Stuart Semple give the film a panoramic view of Placebo’s cultural and emotional resonance.

Formed in London in 1994, Placebo first broke into public consciousness with their 1996 self-titled debut, driven by the provocative charisma of Brian Molko and the sleek, genre-defying guitar work of Stefan Olsdal. The album spawned hits like Nancy Boy and Bruise Pristine, quickly marking the band out as an unapologetically androgynous, emotionally intense alternative to the prevailing Britpop tide.

Their follow-up, Without You I’m Nothing (1998), cemented their legacy, buoyed by the Bowie-assisted single Without You I’m Nothing and the brooding, glam-tinged anthems Pure Morning and Every You Every Me. Over the next two decades, Placebo would evolve across genres — from dark electronica to aggressive rock — while never losing their emotional rawness and outsider appeal.

Albums like Black Market Music (2000), Sleeping With Ghosts (2003), and Meds (2006) showcased the band’s thematic commitment to exploring sexuality, addiction, mental health, and societal disconnection — themes that remain just as vital in their latest work.

After a near-decade-long studio hiatus, Placebo returned in 2022 with Never Let Me Go, their eighth album, which debuted in the UK Top 3 and marked a confident continuation of their sonic evolution. Introspective yet defiant, it saw them channel contemporary anxieties through layered production and uncompromising lyrics.

Also featured in the new deluxe set is This Is What You Wanted – Live In Mexico City, recorded at the Palacio de los Deportes in 2023 during Placebo’s world tour in support of Never Let Me Go. The tour reached over 1.5 million fans across the globe, showcasing the enduring power of the band’s live presence. The Mexico City concert captures Placebo at their cathartic best — combining fan favourites with new material that resonates in the post-pandemic age.
