Self Defense Family Return With First New Music In Six Years As ‘Reclusion’ Signals A New Chapter

After six years without new material, Self Defense Family have broken their silence with the release of Reclusion, the band’s first new single since 2020 and their first fresh studio recording in six years.

The track marks a welcome return for one of alternative music’s most unconventional and enduring projects. Fronted by Patrick Kindlon—also known for his work with Drug ChurchSelf Defense Family have long defied easy categorisation, operating less like a traditional band and more like an ever-evolving creative collective built around Kindlon’s intensely personal songwriting.

Clocking in at just two-and-a-half minutes, Reclusion wastes little time making its impact. Opening with brooding guitar work before erupting into crashing drums and emotionally charged vocals, the song gradually builds into the cathartic post-hardcore crescendo that has become a hallmark of the band’s sound. While unmistakably heavy, it’s equally driven by atmosphere and emotional vulnerability, balancing tension with release.

Kindlon has revealed that Reclusion could be the first glimpse of a larger body of work currently taking shape. Although Self Defense Family recorded new material last year, the vocalist admits he’s been wrestling with the pressure of getting these songs exactly right.

Rather than revisiting the existential themes that have often defined the band’s catalogue, Kindlon initially set out to write about family and animals. Instead, he found those subjects naturally intertwined with the same feelings of isolation, uncertainty and emotional fragmentation that have long run through his work. The result is music that remains deeply introspective while reflecting the changing priorities of his own life.

That honesty has always been central to Self Defense Family’s appeal. Since emerging under various names before settling on their current identity, the project has built a fiercely loyal following by embracing constant reinvention, revolving line-ups and an uncompromising creative philosophy. Every release feels less like a commercial product and more like a snapshot of a particular emotional moment.

Although the band have remained largely quiet in recent years—aside from releasing a live album in 2023—the arrival of Reclusion suggests there is still plenty left to say.

Alongside the new single, Self Defense Family are also returning to the stage for a handful of rare live performances across the United States this summer, sharing bills with Fiddlehead, Elliott, Posición Unida, Ink & Dagger, Stress Positions and Slow Mass.

Whether Reclusion proves to be a standalone release or the first taste of a long-awaited new record, it serves as a powerful reminder that Self Defense Family remain one of underground rock’s most emotionally compelling and singular voices.
