Derbyshire’s own These Wicked Rivers have announced their third studio album Fire And Folklore, set for release on 2nd October, alongside the unveiling of new single Ain’t No Smoke.
Marking a major step forward for the band, Fire And Folklore sees the five-piece expanding their signature blues-rock sound into broader territory. While still rooted in groove-heavy riffs and soulful delivery, the new material introduces elements of country and southern influence, signalling a more ambitious and textured sonic direction.
The album was recorded in the band’s hometown of Belper, Derbyshire, in collaboration with acclaimed producer Andy Sneap and co-producer Colin Richardson. The sessions, held at Sneap’s home studio, offered the band a rare opportunity to work closely with two highly respected figures in rock and metal production while staying grounded in their local roots.
Frontman John Hartwell describes the experience as both a privilege and a turning point, highlighting the importance of recording close to where many of the songs were originally written. That sense of place runs throughout the album, reinforcing the band’s connection to their Derbyshire upbringing.
Further reflecting that local pride, the album also features a guest appearance from fellow Derby artist Kezia Gill on the track Sing Another Song, leaning further into the band’s country influences.
Leading the charge is Ain’t No Smoke, a slow-burning, atmospheric track that builds in intensity before delivering a powerful release. Driven by themes of trust and betrayal, the song unfolds in waves, balancing tension and calm in a way that mirrors its emotional core. The accompanying video, directed by Jack Collin, adds a striking visual dimension, featuring fire performer Kiara Leigh and amplifying the track’s elemental feel.
Visually, the album continues the band’s commitment to immersive storytelling. Artwork for Fire And Folklore, created by Natalie Muir, is designed to complement the listening experience, echoing the band’s appreciation for the tactile, intentional act of engaging with a record from start to finish.
Since forming in 2014, These Wicked Rivers have built a reputation for powerful, almost spiritual live performances, cultivating a devoted fanbase known as the “Rivers Family.” Following the success of their previous releases, including Eden and Force Of Nature, the band have steadily grown into one of the UK’s most compelling grassroots rock acts.
