Fanny Lumsden Reimagines Gotye Classic With Glorious New Cover & Gears Up For Massive UK Tour

by | Jun 10, 2025

Award-winning Australian country star Fanny Lumsden is back with her first release since her critically acclaimed 2023 album Hey Dawn, and it’s a bold, beautiful surprise: a radiant reimagining of Gotye’s global smash Somebody That I Used To Know, featuring Kimbra.

Transforming the indie-pop juggernaut into something rich with earthy harmonies and country soul, Lumsden’s version features her full touring band The Prawn Stars on record for the very first time. Produced by Matt Fell, Dan Freeman and Lumsden herself, the single was mixed by Fell and mastered by William Bowden—who also mastered Gotye’s original version—creating a neat full-circle moment.

Speaking about the inspiration, Lumsden explained: “After doing our own version of Somebody That I Used To Know on ABC’s Spicks and Specks last year, we started adding it to our live show. We’ve loved playing around with it so much that we thought it was about time we recorded it! It makes me so happy that each of these people I spend so much time with on the road brought a little of themselves to the song.”

The accompanying music video—capturing the rustic charm and camaraderie of Lumsden’s touring life—was shot on a hilltop in Australia’s Upper Murray region, just before the band played the Man From Snowy River Festival. Directed and produced by Lumsden and Freeman, the clip was impressively wrapped in just 90 minutes.

The single’s release comes as Lumsden prepares to return to the UK and Ireland for a 21-date tour across July and August 2025—her fourth visit in two years following a triumphant 2023 debut on Glastonbury’s Avalon Stage. She’ll perform headline shows from Leeds to London, revisit her grassroots Country Halls Tour in rural Scotland, and appear at major festivals including Together Again, Beautiful Days, Greenbelt, and The Long Road.

Her overseas momentum builds on the back of Hey Dawn, which debuted at #1 on the Australian Country Charts and #10 on the ARIA Albums Chart. It earned her a second ARIA for Best Country Album, her third AIR Award, and a ninth Golden Guitar. Not one to rest on her laurels, Lumsden is already working on new music set for release later this year and will join Australian legends Paul Kelly and Lucinda Williams on tour in August.

From sheep farms in western New South Wales to sold-out halls across Scotland, Fanny Lumsden continues to rewrite the rules of country music with authenticity, joy and a distinctly Australian voice. Her shimmering new single is just another chapter in a career defined by fearless reinvention and heartfelt storytelling.
