by | Nov 15, 2024

Gustaffson have released their hauntingly beautiful new single Flowers, featuring Emmy-winning composer Bear McCreary (Outlander, Walking Dead). The track is accompanied by an official music video, which is directed by Bafta winning director Myriam Raja (Topboy) and stars Jamie Harris (West Side Story & Carnival Row).

Speaking on the latest release, he said: “Flowers is about exploring the extraordinary in the ordinary. The day to day gesture of buying flowers for any occasion: from heartbreaking loss, to the innocence of young love. Just like the actual flower, the pain or love can either grow stronger or eventually pass way. The song builds from the simplicity of voice & piano before moving into the filmic string orchestra McCreary composed. It all started with a lyric ‘old flowers from the funeral what do I do with you today? You were new last week and I’ve got to throw you away’.”

Flowers is the second of three exclusive singles from Gustaffson’s debut album Black & White Movie, it follows the beautifully soulful On Broadway. The album, out on 15th March 2025, is produced by Elbow’s Craig Potter and features collaborations with Emmy-winning composer Bear McCreary and legendary actor Sir Ben Kingsley.

The formation of Gustaffson was serendipitous. While on a film set, Gower met Elbow musician and producer Craig Potter, sparking a musical collaboration. Gustaffson recorded their debut EP, The Jacaranda, at the iconic Blue Print Studios in Manchester with new band members David Gleave (bass) and Graham Bennett (drums). Released in August 2022, the EP was played across national BBC Radio stations and was even named Record of the Week on Guy Garvey’s Finest Hour (BBC Radio 6).

In 2023, Gustaffson welcomed Liam Morson (keys) and returned to Blueprint Studios to record their live single, Northern Baby, once again with Craig Potter, who also mixed the track. This single made its radio debut on BBC Manchester and was featured on BBC Sport. In August 2023, they released Champagne Socialist, recorded on the Liverpool Empire stage, receiving rave reviews from BBC Introducing, among others. The live music video pays homage to legendary performances on the Empire stage by acts such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Chuck Berry.

In January 2024, Gustaffson completed recording their debut album, Black & White Movie, at Blueprint Studios, with Elbow’s Craig Potter returning as producer. The album includes a collaboration with Emmy-winning composer Bear McCreary and features legendary actor Sir Ben KingsleyOn Broadway is the first of three exclusive singles from the album accompanied by a small UK tour covering Glasgow, Liverpool, Manchester, and London. The highly anticipated album is set to be released on 14th March 2025.

Gustaffson’s debut album: where music and film converge to tell extraordinary tales of ordinary lives. With 13 tracks that serve as individual cinematic experiences, Andrew Gower’s poignant lyrics, honed over 15 years as an actor, shines light & darkness on the duality of human existence. Seamlessly blending the iconic sounds of both music and film industries, this album invites listeners on a journey where every track is a movie in its own right. Gustaffson are excited to present this original vintage record in a modern algorithmic world.
