New York post-punk icons Interpol have announced their long-awaited seventh studio album, This Mirror Weighs A Ton, set for release on 28th August via Partisan Records. Marking their first full-length release in four years and their debut for the influential independent label, the album arrives alongside two striking new tracks, the atmospheric title song and the driving See Out Loud.
For a band whose sound has become synonymous with moody atmospherics, razor-sharp guitars and nocturnal intensity, This Mirror Weighs A Ton promises to be both a continuation and expansion of Interpol’s celebrated legacy. Produced by Andrew Wyatt and mixed by David Fridmann, the record sees the trio pushing beyond familiar territory while retaining the unmistakable chemistry that has defined them for more than two decades.
Recorded at Wyatt’s Lower East Side studio in Manhattan, the album marks a symbolic homecoming for the band, representing the first time they have made a record in New York City in over ten years. The setting appears to have inspired a creative reinvigoration, with strings, woodwinds, layered harmonies, acoustic instrumentation and experimental textures woven throughout the album’s twelve tracks.
The two newly released songs offer listeners an early glimpse into the record’s sonic scope. The title track unfolds with a cinematic grandeur, built around brooding basslines, spectral vocal layers and immersive sound design that gradually expands into something hypnotic and emotionally weighty. In contrast, See Out Loud channels the urgency and tension that first made Interpol one of the defining bands of the early 2000s post-punk revival. Anchored by angular guitars and driving rhythms, the song also features a rare lead vocal contribution from guitarist Daniel Kessler, his first prominent vocal appearance since the band’s landmark debut album Turn On The Bright Lights.
Frontman Paul Banks has explained that the album’s title emerged organically during his improvisational songwriting process, where melodies and lyrics often develop simultaneously. Themes of reflection, perception and emotional conflict run throughout the record, creating a collection of songs that examines both personal and collective identity through Interpol’s uniquely evocative lens.
The announcement arrives at a time when the band remain at the peak of their live powers. Over the last two years Interpol have maintained a relentless touring schedule across Europe, Asia and Latin America, culminating in their largest-ever headline performance in Mexico City, where more than 200,000 fans gathered to witness the band live. Their appearance at this year’s Coachella Festival also offered audiences an early preview of material from the forthcoming album.
Now Interpol are preparing to bring their new era to audiences across Europe and the UK with an ambitious co-headline arena tour alongside fellow indie pioneers Bloc Party. Pairing two of the most influential alternative bands of the last quarter-century, the tour promises to be one of the most anticipated live events of the autumn.
With This Mirror Weighs A Ton, Interpol appear determined not simply to revisit past glories but to evolve their sound while remaining true to the qualities that made them one of the defining rock bands of their generation. Judging by the strength of the opening tracks, the next chapter is shaping up to be one of their most compelling yet.
