Australian singer-songwriter Julia Jacklin has announced her eagerly anticipated fourth studio album, The Gem, set for release on 25th September via 4AD. Marking her first release for the iconic independent label, the album is introduced by the charming and emotionally complex new single, Get Away From Me (I Think I’ll Love You Soon), available now alongside a self-directed video.
The new track offers a bright and immediate first glimpse into The Gem, blending jangling guitars and melodic warmth with Jacklin’s trademark lyrical honesty. While its title hints at emotional hesitation, the song radiates an effortless confidence, drawing inspiration from the guitar-driven sounds that have long influenced her songwriting. It’s a playful yet thoughtful introduction to a record that promises to explore the push and pull between intimacy and independence.
That tension sits at the very heart of The Gem. Across ten new songs, Jacklin examines the contradictions that shape adult life: the desire for deep connection alongside the need for freedom, the comfort of belonging alongside the fear of losing oneself. It’s a theme that has quietly threaded through much of her acclaimed catalogue, but on The Gem it comes into sharper focus than ever before.
Recorded entirely in Melbourne and co-produced by Jacklin alongside Robert Muinos, the album emerged from a markedly different creative process than her previous releases. Working out of Rat Shack Studios above Melbourne venue The Gem — the pub that ultimately inspired the album’s title — Jacklin surrounded herself with close friends and collaborators, allowing the songs to evolve organically over an extended recording period.
What initially began as a straightforward studio project developed into something far more exploratory. Rather than rushing through sessions, Jacklin and her band spent nearly a year refining arrangements, experimenting with ideas and allowing the record’s identity to emerge naturally. The result is an album that feels deeply personal while capturing the spontaneous energy of a close-knit creative community.
The title itself carries multiple meanings. On one level it references the Melbourne venue that became the album’s spiritual home. On another, it reflects the process of uncovering something valuable through patience, persistence and self-discovery. The songs on The Gem reportedly document a period of reinvention for Jacklin, following years of relentless touring and the uncertainty of navigating life between album cycles.
Since emerging with her acclaimed debut Don’t Let The Kids Win in 2016, Jacklin has become one of the most respected voices in contemporary indie music. Her ability to transform everyday anxieties, relationships and personal reflections into affecting, beautifully observed songs has earned her a devoted global audience. Follow-up albums Crushing and PRE PLEASURE further cemented her reputation for emotionally resonant songwriting that balances vulnerability with quiet strength.
With The Gem, Jacklin appears poised to open another chapter, one rooted in creative freedom and artistic self-trust. If Get Away From Me (I Think I’ll Love You Soon) is any indication, it could prove to be her most expansive and self-assured work yet.
Ahead of the album’s release, Jacklin will visit a number of independent record stores across the UK and Ireland for intimate performances and signing sessions before embarking on a full UK and European tour in early 2027.
