The set commenced unconventionally with renowned performance artist Marina Abramović taking the stage to lead the audience in a seven-minute silence. Dressed in a white outfit that transformed into a peace symbol, Abramović’s presence set a contemplative tone, urging reflection on global issues such as war and violence. This moment of collective introspection, initiated and concluded with a gong rung by festival organiser Emily Eavis, created a rare and powerful atmosphere at the festival .

Emerging in a white smock adorned with black, leafless trees, Harvey opened with three tracks from her 2023 album, I Inside the Old Year Dying. Songs like Prayer At The Gate and The Nether-Edge enveloped the audience in a mystical soundscape, characterised by spectral vocals and minimalist instrumentation. The stage, set with wooden furniture reminiscent of a monastic setting, enhanced the otherworldly atmosphere .

Midway through the performance, Polly Jean transitioned into more familiar territory with selections from her 2011 album Let England Shake. Tracks like “The Glorious Land” and “The Words That Maketh Murder” resonated deeply, their anti-war themes amplified by the current global climate and the earlier silence led by Abramović .

The energy intensified as Harvey delved into her earlier work. She shed her ethereal persona during “50ft Queenie,” delivering a performance filled with raw intensity. “Man-Size” and her debut single “Dress” followed, showcasing her ability to blend visceral rock elements with her evolved artistic expression .

The set concluded with “To Bring You My Love,” performed with a brooding intensity that left the audience in a reflective state. Harvey’s closing piece served as a reminder of her enduring ability to captivate and challenge her audience, leaving a lasting impression on all who witnessed the performance .

PJ Harvey’s Glastonbury 2024 set was not just a concert but a multifaceted performance that fused music, art, and activism, reaffirming her status as a pioneering and thought-provoking artist.
