Manchester songwriter John Blaylock has unveiled his latest single Where Did All My Friends Go?, offering a poignant preview of his forthcoming debut album Sounds Of The Dreadnought, set for release on 8th May.
Blending indie sensibilities with a subtle hip-hop pulse, the track showcases Blaylock’s knack for storytelling, rooted in lived experience. Drawing from his own life, the song reflects on friendships formed in youth that have since drifted apart—shaped by time, distance and life’s inevitable changes. Despite its nostalgic core, the track carries an underlying optimism, suggesting those bonds are never entirely lost.
Produced by Guy Massey—known for his work with Ed Sheeran and Manic Street Preachers—alongside Helen Boulding, the single was recorded at Konk Studios, the legendary studio founded by The Kinks. It also features drums from Freddy Sheed, adding further depth to its dynamic arrangement.
The track sits within Sounds Of The Dreadnought, a debut shaped by Blaylock’s journey through both the UK and international music scenes. Written across Manchester and various global locations, the album promises a blend of introspection, romance and lived experience—capturing moments of love, ambition and self-reflection across its eleven tracks.
Blaylock’s path to this release has been anything but conventional. After early success with his first band, including national radio play and involvement in a project linked to Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday celebrations, he went on to write and collaborate internationally with a range of artists across Los Angeles, Sweden and Japan. Despite finding success behind the scenes, a turning point came during his time in Ecuador, where he realised his songs were meant to be performed in his own voice—prompting his return to the UK to pursue a solo career.
Beyond his recording work, Blaylock is also the driving force behind The Daytime Singers, a Manchester-based community initiative that uses music to bring people together and combat isolation—an ethos that resonates strongly within his songwriting.
With Where Did All My Friends Go?, Blaylock offers a deeply relatable introduction to his world—one that balances personal reflection with a universal emotional pull. As anticipation builds for Sounds Of The Dreadnought, he emerges as a compelling new voice in the lineage of Northern songwriting.
