Cult 4AD-era shoegaze outfit Swallow are set to re-emerge from the archives with the announcement of Blown, a comprehensive double LP reissue arriving on 5th June.
The collection brings together their long-out-of-print releases Blow and Blowback, alongside a special two-track 12” single titled Sleepers, which is available now. The release offers a long-overdue spotlight on a band whose brief but influential early ’90s output has quietly endured as a hidden gem within the shoegaze canon.
Formed in London by Louise Trehy and Mike Mason, Swallow were signed to 4AD after label founder Ivo Watts-Russell received a demo tape through the post. Their debut album Blow, released in 1992, introduced a lush, immersive sound built on layers of distorted guitars and Trehy’s ethereal vocals. Later that same year, Blowback followed — a reworked and remixed companion piece that leaned further into experimental and ambient territory.
Now fully reconstructed from original 24-track recordings, Blown presents both records newly remastered by Anne Taegert, with updated artwork from long-time 4AD collaborator Chris Bigg. The result is a revitalised listening experience that captures both the dreamlike beauty and sonic ambition of the band’s original vision.
To mark the announcement, Swallow have shared Sleepers, a two-track release featuring previously unreleased material including Blow and Lovesleep (Vocal Version). Accompanied by newly created visualisers using archival 16mm footage, the tracks offer a rare glimpse into the band’s creative process during their short-lived but fertile period.
Despite their early promise, Swallow’s trajectory was cut short after parting ways with 4AD and releasing a final EP via Rough Trade Records. However, their legacy endured in unexpected ways — including a notable sample by The Chemical Brothers on their landmark debut Exit Planet Dust, which introduced their sound to a wider audience.
More than three decades on, Blown serves as both a rediscovery and a reappraisal — positioning Swallow alongside the defining acts of the shoegaze movement while reaffirming their place within the wider 4AD legacy.
